Correct way to clean out frost from a freezer?

I have a mini fridge and it has little freezer on the upper right hand corner.
It’s full of frost and I can’t put anything in there anymore. I was told that you can use a knife to remove the frost. I was also told that using a knife can damage the freezer. So what is the correct way to remove the frost without any damage?

Elaborating on the previous answers.

You should unplug the freezer and keep the door open. Once the ice has started melting and is no longer frozen to the walls of the freezer you can use a tool such as a knife to break up the remaining ice. Be careful not to damage the walls of the freezer by prying the ice away from it.

If you leave the ice to melt by itself you will end up with a pool of water somewhere. Use a bucket/bowl to catch the water. Try to remove the ice along the way.
