messed up ipod? Laser Engraving?

i have a 3g ipod nano with a metal back. i almost lost my ipod but got it back, so my dad took a knife and carved my name into the back. lol. any idea how i can get this away somehow? like sanding or something? its not deep, but its very very noticeable. i want to make it better so i can get the laser engraving. thanks!
